Human Resource Management (M.A.)

This master's degree program prepares students to excel as specialists or generalist human resource professionals, managers, and consultants. Students acquire competencies in all of the core human resource management functional areas within a systems perspective, and relating strategically to overall organization performance.

Upon successful completion of the human resource management program, students will be able to

  • use organizational analysis and research methodology to develop and implement HR and OD interventions that support high performance in individuals, teams, and organizations;
  • identify and develop HR and knowledge management interventions that support business strategies and add value to the entire business enterprise;
  • function as a role model of HR leadership, orchestrating strategy and working effectively in a team environment; and
  • implement and continuously monitor HR initiatives in alignment with personnel law, health and safety regulations, ethical behavior, labor relations, diversity, and international issues.

This program is certified by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) to be in alignment with designated competencies as required by each association.

Admission Requirements: In addition to universitywide requirements, applicants to the M.A. in Human Resource Management are required to submit a GRE or GMAT test score unless they qualify for a waiver by meeting one of the criteria below.

  • The standardized test requirement will be waived for applicants who have earned a master's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • The standardized test requirement will be waived for applicants from Marymount or other ACBSP - or AACSB-accredited programs if the applicant has received his/her undergraduate business degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Applicants who meet these criteria will be fully admitted to the MBA program on completion of Marymount University's MBA admission process. 
  • The standardized test requirement will also be waived for applicants who have received a non-business baccalaureate degree from Marymount or an accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, a grade of B or better in statistics or calculus level course, and a grade of B or better in an English composition or literature course. 
  • Applicants who do not meet any of the eligibility criteria above for a standardized test waiver, but hold three to five years of post-baccalaureate work experience that demonstrates career progression, may request a waiver. These will be granted on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the program director.

Minimum Grade Requirements: Students in the human resource management program must meet the university’s academic standards for graduate students and achieve a minimum grade of B- for each course required for the degree. All graduate students in the School of Business and Technology must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Students whose cumulative GPA falls below 3.0 will be placed on academic probation. Students must bring their cumulative GPA to 3.0 within nine (9) graduate credits or be dismissed. A student whose cumulative GPA falls below 3.0 a second time will be dismissed.
