IPE 501 Introduction to Palliative Care

This course provides an overview of the principles and practices of palliative care with an emphasis on end-of-life care. Students will learn about the social history of death, medical advancements in extending life, and the development of the modern hospice movement and palliative care. They will explore the physical, social, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of chronic and advanced illness as well as economic, legal, and ethical issues in the delivery of palliative care. Students will be introduced to the roles of the palliative care team and the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork for improving quality of life for patients and their families.
