Nursing (B.S.N.) Four-Year Program Track
The B.S.N. program prepares students to practice as professional nurses in a demanding and rapidly changing health care system. The program is ideal for entering first-year students and students with general education transfer credits in non-nursing fields.
Admission Requirements for First-Year Students: First-year students are admitted to the nursing program through the admissions process described in the admissions section. Prerequisite courses and Liberal Arts Core courses are taken during the first and second years of the nursing program; they provide the foundation for nursing major courses that are taken during the third and fourth years. The prerequisite sciences require a strong foundation in basic sciences, and, therefore, completion of high school biology and chemistry is strongly recommended. High school sciences grades and overall high school grade point average are critical factors in the admissions process for the nursing major. SAT scores, when available, are also considered in the nursing admissions process.
Progression to the nursing major courses is contingent on meeting specific academic requirements that prepare students to succeed in the rigorous nursing courses. Upon completion of the second year of the B.S.N. program, students are eligible to progress into the junior year nursing major courses provided they have met the academic criteria listed below. Note: The program does not limit the number of academically qualified students who are allowed to progress into nursing major courses.
Upon completion of the sophomore year at Marymount, University, students who declared nursing as their major upon admission, are eligible to progress into the junior year and the nursing major courses provided the student has attained the following:
- a minimum Marymount GPA of 2.5;
- a minimum grade of C in BIO 161, BIO 161L, BIO 162, BIO 162L, BIO 260, BIO 260L, CHM 125, CHM 125L, HPR 345, PSY 110, MA 132, and SOC 131;
- a cumulative science GPA of a minimum of a 2.8 in the physical science courses (BIO 161, BIO 161L, BIO 162, BIO 162L, BIO 260, CHM 125, CHM 125L). Note: if a course is repeated, both grades are included in this calculation; and
- ATI TEAS Scores of 68% overall and 68% in the science subsection.
Failure to meet these criteria will delay the student’s progression in the Nursing program.
Courses can be retaken according to the catalog guidelines to meet the grade and GPA threshold. If the 68% TEAS thresholds are not met, the student must complete the ATI TEAS remediation and must retake the TEAS to meet the minimum grade.
Admission Requirements: Admission to the nursing program is competitive. Minimum criteria for admission include a score of 68% on the ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills (ATI-TEAS) in the overall and science sections and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 in classes being transferred to Marymount, and a GPA of 2.8 in any completed science courses (to include Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Microbiology and all associated labs). The submission of a personal statement is required.
Most transfer students require at least five semesters to complete the program and must follow the progression of nursing courses in the semesters as indicated in the degree plan. Nursing courses are not offered in the summer for four-year B.S.N. students.
All requirements to start nursing courses (above) apply to transfer students including the completion of all Liberal Arts Core and science prerequisites prior to beginning any nursing courses.
Current Marymount University students who transferred into the university as undeclared students or in a major other than nursing may request admission to the B.S.N. program after the completion of at least one semester at Marymount. Admission to the nursing program is competitive. Students requesting a change of major to nursing must provide the following to the School Director, Malek School of Nursing Professions in the College of Health and Education: a completed change of academic program form, a personal statement, and ATI-TEAS scores. Minimum criteria include a 68% on the overall and science sections of the ATI-TEAS, a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a GPA of 2.8 in any completed science courses (to include Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Microbiology and all associated labs).
