FLP 504 Criminalization of the Mentally Ill

An in-depth analysis of the nature and extent of mental illness within the United States, and its relationship to crime, deviance, and the criminal justice system. The course focuses on how and why individuals with mental health (MH) problems become involved in the criminal justice system, and on how the criminal justice and public health systems respond to that involvement. Topics include law enforcement responses, court-based strategies, mental health problems and corrections, community supervision of individuals with mental illness, and unique challenges associated with veteran, female, and juvenile populations.
