This course is an introduction to the field of speech-language pathology and audiology explored through a disability justice perspective. This course will explore disability perspectives specific to communication throughout the lifespan as it relates to disability and the roles of speech-language pathologists and audiologists. We will explore common communication disabilities from infant/preschool through adults and aging adults. Topics such as Deafness, learning disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, and dementia will be discussed. Disability and communication will be examined using an anti-racist and decolonized lens examining power and privilege in speech, language and hearing and discussing the role of power and privilege in healthcare and education systems. Students must achieve a minimum grade of B. (3)
