SOC 161 Social Problems of the Modern World

 When does an ‘issue’ become a social problem? Social problems are typically viewed as issues that negatively impact significant portions of society. These issues often arise from failures in organizations and social institutions. They may also arise as the result of profound cultural change. But, a social problem for some in society may not be a problem for others. This course examines the social, political, economic, and cultural construction of social problems in the U.S. and beyond. The course addresses important questions related to 1) how social problems have been defined over the decades, 2) the root causes of social problems, and 3) how can these social problems be addressed at all levels of society.
